The line from Norton Fitzwarren
to Watchet was built by the first
West Somerset Railway Company
and opened for traffic in 1862.
It was another twelve years before
the Minehead Railway Company
opened the line to Minehead from
an end-on junction at Watchet.
Train services in the early years
were worked by the Bristol and
Exeter Railway and later by the
Great Western Railway (GWR).
In 1882 the branch was converted
from the GWR's 7 foot 0¼ inches
broad gauge to the standard gauge
of 4 feet 8½ inches.
